How does the Classic Photo Booth Work?

How does the classic photo booth work?

If you have contacted us previuosly, or read through the information on this website, you know that we explain the classic photo booth as utilizing a film and developing process. I will also tell potential clients to think of the classic photo booth as a miniature darkroom, but with all the new age technology- smartphones, wi-fi, touch screens, printers, voice recognition, digital cameras and so on; the idea of, "developing," pictures (as opposed to printing), and the use of, "film," has, sadly, lost it's meaning.

We at Photo Illusion, LLC, really want to be able to give you an idea of what you're actually getting when you rent the classic photo booth and what really goes on inside. We want all of your guests to know why, exactly, it takes the seemingly long 3 minutes (c'mon! it's not so bad- and you KNOW it's worth it!) to get your picture- therefore, we have developed our NEW, "How does the classic photo booth work?" page. Below, you will find photos of each part of the classic photo booth along with diagrams and explanations about what each part does!

Already have a photo booth, but don't know what to do with it? That's okay too! We offer service agreements and guarantee that we can get that old photo booth you have either in storage or hiding in the basement of your restaurant working like new!

1. Hello! This is a picture of one of our

classic photo booths! Lets take a closer look!

2. As you enter the photo booth, you will see a stool- this is where

you will sit to have your photos taken. You'd be amazed

at how many people can actually fit in here!

Behind the stool you can see a red curtain- this curtain

can be pulled behind you in color photos to create a

red background.

You can also see a lit up area behind the seating are. This is

a flash box that helps create the perfect amount of light

to make your photos look perfect. When our fabulous

technicians set all of the inner-workings up in conjunction with

the right flash settings, your pictures come out flawless!

Next, lets see if we can make sense of what you're

looking at once you are seated inside the photo booth!

3. Here is what you're faced with when you are seated inside the

classic photo booth.

First and foremost, you'll see the glass square right in the center.

This is where you will focus on while your picture is being taken.

The arrow to the left of the glass indicates where, "eye-level,"

is- meaning this is where your eye-level should be! You'll know

if you're seated at the right height because you will be able to

see your reflection in the glass.

On the upper left portion of the door is the green start button!

Push this button to begin taking your pictures!

The lit up area above the start button is another flash box

that also needs to be set-up properly in order to ensure

that your pictures are well-lit and clear.

Let's take a look inside!

4. Ah! Now you can see what we mean by, "Miniature dark room."

The picture you see in part 3 of this explanation is actually the

door to the mini dark room. The image you see to the right

is what you'll see when this door is opened!

5. Here is a full inside view of the classic photo booth.

Each part has been labeled accordingly.

AP-10- This is the part that sits all the way at the top of

the inside of the photo booth. In the photo to the left, you are

able to see the bottom corner of it. This blue box powers

the entire machine and sends the right amount

of electricity to each part of the photo booth in

order to make it run properly.

Film- The film starts off in the black canister you see here.

When you push the start button the film gets fed through the....

Camera- The camera uses prism and light reflection to capture

your image on film. As each picture is taken the light bounces

your image through the prism and onto the film!

After your 4 pictures are taken, the film gets fed down into

the....

Spider- The Spider opens up and the film gets fed into it

so it can go through the developing process.

The film strip looks like a plain white strip until it gets to

the 9th dunk tank! It is not until then that it is fully developed!

Once your photo goes through the entire developing

process, it gets fed into the....

Delivery Unit- The delivery unit grabs your picture from the spider

and literally, "Delivers," it to you outside the booth!

6. The film strip must get dipped into 11 tanks to fully develop.

Then why are there 12 tanks? Good question! The tank

located directly to the left of the first green tank is only there to clean the

spider before it grabs the picture from the camera before

the developing process.

The colored tanks contain chemicals that are needed to

develop the photos!

All of the white tanks, with the exception of the circled tank with the #9

on it, contain water. Plain old every day water from the sink.

The GREEN tanks contain developer and are the first tank the strip

dips into to start the developing process! The RED tank contains bleach.

The YELLOW tanks contain fixer, and the 9th tank contains Toner.

It is not until the film strip goes through this entire process that your

picture is revealed!

7. These images show you how the spider dips the film strip into each

tank. As I mentioned before, your pictures are not visible until

the strip gets to the 9th dunk tank- this is why, if you look

closely, it looks like a blank strip is in the spider.

It's like magic!

8. FINALLY, after that interminable 3 minutes is up, your photo

gets delivered through the delivery unit.

Is that a hair dryer in there? YES, it is- the hair

dryer is set to turn on for 10 seconds to dry the water off

of your picture.

*Hopefully* at this point in the process you are laughing and smiling

at the picture you've just received!

Does all of this look exceptionally complicated?

Probably- and we understand that! That's why we are the experts. The owner of our company has more than 20 years experience working with these machines and we are one of the last remaining companies who can still work with and provide an authentic vintage photo booth!\
